Trellix, the web-based site builder software used by Web.com®, was created in 1997 by Dan Bricklin of Trellix Corporation. The idea behind its creation was to build a website creation tool that could be used in Trellix’s own corporate intranet to develop, organize, and store data. Shortly after its creation, the extraordinary potential of such software was realized, and the company made Trellix available to the general public as a downloadable website creation program. This allowed people who weren’t experienced with the web to easily build a website that was high quality and functional.

Trellix Site Builder History

The first website creation software of its kind, Trellix was the beginning of the do-it-yourself website movement and helped millions of small business owners and individuals make websites without any knowledge of the coding language previously required. Its simple editing and publishing tools allowed users to select fonts and colors as well as insert graphics and their own text without editing HTML code, making the Internet far more accessible to the general public.

In 2001, Trellix developed Trellix Web Express, an online-based version of the software that included the same ease of use and first-rate editing features but required no download.

Interland®, which would later become Web.com, bought the rights to Trellix Web in 2003 and began further development of the software to create the most user-friendly, fully customizable website creation software in the world. Downloadable versions were soon discontinued as the online Trellix site builder proved to be the most cutting-edge website creation software available.

Trellix Site Builder Today

Today, Trellix Web Express is called Trellix Site Builder. This online tool allows Web.com customers to choose from a great variety of website templates, all of which are fully customizable.
