Oops!!! I still add a list of keywords for a page that I have written because this will build my tag cloud and these words become my true meta information for the page that I can use for later reference.

Thanks for the comments. One of the things we've found with personalized search over the past few weeks is that established sites have gotten good traffic thanks to the search histories of their visitors. Also, you can get unfiltered results by adding "&pws=0" (without the quotes) to the URL of Google search results, then pressing enter.

Thanks for the relevant information regarding search engines and how they apply differently to individual searches. This updated info will help me keep my clients on the front page of any search engine. Thanks.

Regarding personalised search, you say "With millions of different search histories changing Google's results, understanding your true search engine position is going to become more problematic." I think this is now true, but then it also points to something which has always been true . . . search engine position isn't a very good indicator of SEO success. It's too variable anyway, let alone with the new developments above . . . and furthermore, it's just a means to an end . . . more visitors, better visitors, and more conversions. These are what you need to track, not the rankings.

Patrick,

The personalized search is great but it also skews results for people who are not as savvy and know that they are your results and not the entire world's. It is a great tool for keeping things local, and for the small business to be able to be on the front page of the search engines is an opportunity to get found when there would probably have not been a chance. I think it is beneficial for many industries that thrive on location marketing.

As you do not have to be logged into your Google account for personalized search, can you "erase" your personalized search if you clear your cookies? Just curious.

Very good article. It's certainly quite interesting to see how 'Internet Search' has changed and continues to change. User behavior consequently changes each time there is a major shift in how information is presented.
