As an organic grower who relies on the local community to keep my business thriving, creating and maintaining a connection with my customers is critical. To find a way to stay connected with customers I decided to start blogging for my business.
Here are three basics of blogging that have helped me connect with my customers, share more about my business and most of all, stand out online with my blog.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that customers want to see the real you and what’s happening in your business. When you’re thinking about what to blog about, it doesn’t mean that you have to always create unique content, but rather that you need to have your own fresh perspective.
For me, a big part of that has been focusing on writing what I know. As an organic grower, there are many things I can share on my blog, and I stick to what I know best such as farming techniques, selecting the right soils and nutrients and the principles of organic farming.

“After trying out a new non-toxic nutrient that was recommended to me by another grower, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the results. Today, I harvested a batch of carrots and my yield was nearly 30% higher than usual.”
As a grower, I’m the first to admit that many things happen in the course of a day that are downright comical. I’ve learned to share those as a way to build rapport with my readers.
By using humor and sharing stories when I’m blogging, I’m able to create posts that no one else can, and best of all they’re memorable. Plus, a well-timed meme or GIF always adds an extra laugh.

“One of the things I love about being an organic grower is that nature always has some surprises in store for me. Today, I encountered a strange-looking bug sitting in my lettuce patch and it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The first person to correctly identify what kind of bug this is will get a free box of organic produce!”
Running a business where I don’t sit behind a computer all day means I need to carve out time for the blog, but I’ve learned that being consistent is key to keeping my content on track.
Using the publication scheduling feature in WordPress allows me to post content even when I’m in the field. When I post on a schedule I expand my audience and my loyal readers know to look for new posts. Plus, sharing fresh content keeps me and my business top of mind, and I find ways to tie it into what’s happening on a day-to-day basis on the farm.

“When you run a business that’s reliant on weather, being flexible with daily plans is essential. Rain, in particular, can derail an entire day, so having a plan for when the sun comes back out is the best way to get things back on track. On good weather days, I get an early start before sunrise. If it’s really hot out, I take a break in the afternoon then resume working later on so I can take advantage of the cooler temperatures.”
By implementing these three simple strategies when you begin blogging for your business, your audience will find you relatable and interesting. With a little humor, some honest insight and regular communication, your blogging can pay off by making existing customers even more loyal and finding new customers as well.
