To help you sift through some of the data, every week we’re going to look at three books for small business owners and the lessons you can learn from reading them.

Author Ed McLaughlin took the path many of us followed to become business owners. He was “on the fast track” working for some of America’s best-known corporations, such as IBM and HP, but felt something was missing. He wanted to be in control of his life, was over dealing with office politics and was simply tired of working for others. So he quit his job (even though “most people told me I was crazy”) and started two businesses.
The book is partly a memoir of McLaughlin’s journey and partly a manual for business startup. McLaughlin covers the tools and processes you need to go from discovery to operations. Plus the Appendix offers two special sections, “The Startup Roundmap” and “The Startup Funding Guide.”
