There is so much small business owners need to know to operate at peak performance. Luckily we live in the Information Age with plentiful resources. To help you sift through some of the data, every week we’re going to look at three business books and the lessons you can learn from reading them.
Wind in Your Sales: Vital Strategies that Accelerate Your Entrepreneurial Growth ($28.95)
If you follow author David Greer on Twitter, every day you will get a Tweet asking, “How can I help you be successful today?” That’s the purpose of this book—Greer wants to help you “get clear” on the strategy and purpose of your business.
Greer is a devoted sailor (hence the title of the book) and uses sailing insights to underscore some of his points. One such lesson, “Slow Down to Speed Up,” which Greer applies to reading his book, is apt advice for all entrepreneurs moving at the speed of light while trying to grow their businesses.
The book is filled with great, actionable advice, not just from Greer, but from scores of business owners as well. But my favorite aspect of the book is that Greer isn’t hawking a one-solution-fits- all approach. In fact, he says, “There is no single answer for how to successfully market and sell your products or build your business.” Instead, he says, there “are ways.” And that’s just what you get from Wind in Your Sales—lots of ideas, tips and strategies so you can figure out what works best for you.
Fiercely Loyal: How High Performing Companies Develop and Retain Top Talent ($24.70)

As the economy heats up, it’s getting harder for companies to attract and retain good employees. But you need loyal employees in order to grow and scale your businesses. So what’s the solution? Author Dov Baron, an international communication expert, focuses on appealing to Millennials, since there’s been so much focus put on them as employees.
Baron believes leaders need to “embrace vulnerability and go ‘Full Monty’ to keep their top talent and generate fierce and unshakeable loyalty.” And he recommends you appoint a Chief Relationship Officer to help.
At the end of the day, Baron says, it’s all about authenticity. Authentic leaders inspire fierce loyalty, not just from their staff, but from their customers as well.
Mindsharing: The Art of Crowdsourcing Everything ($26.95)

Author Lior Zoref, a consultant, speaker, “crowd wisdom researcher” and formerly a longtime Microsoft executive, says the key to crowdsourcing is not “asking people to think for us, but instead to think with us.”
Part of the benefit of reaching out to the crowd is that the input we receive helps us make decisions without emotion. The step-by-step guidelines Zoref offers in this book and the examples he uses apply equally to your personal and entrepreneurial lives.
Zoref believes mindsharing is “the key to our future.” As he writes, “If great minds think alike, clever minds think together.”
