7 Ways to Celebrate International Women’s Day

Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. Here's what you need to know.

What does International Women’s Day mean?

International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women around the world. It also calls for gender parity.

How did International Women's Day start?

International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900s. Much like today, this was a time of great expansion and turbulence as industrialization took hold and women’s roles in society transformed. Learn more about the history of International Women’s Day.

How can my business participate?

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Be Bold for Change.” The IWD website offers some suggestions for participating:

  1. Make every day International Women’s Day. How does your business treat women? Are you equitable in terms of promotion, leadership and pay? Do you have family-friendly policies? Change starts with you.
  2. Decide to buy from companies that support women. As an individual and a business owner, can you buy from independent, women-owned businesses? Can you proactively seek out women-owned businesses as suppliers and vendors?
  3. Mentor a woman and sponsor her goals. The Tory Burch Foundation connects women entrepreneurs with financing, mentoring and entrepreneurial education.
  4. Support or invest in a woman-owned business. Join an organization that finances promising women-owned startups, such as Astia.
  5. Support women inventors of new products and services. Donate to women who are crowdfunding their product ideas. (Check out this list of the 25 top crowdfunding websites.)
  6. Think globally. Give to the Asia Foundation, which works to expand opportunities for women worldwide through education, entrepreneurship and vocational training that gives women the knowledge and skills to earn an income and lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
  7. Do your part to ensure that the future for the next generation of girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding. The official charity of International Women’s Day, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), is the largest volunteer organization focused on girls and young women, with 10 million members across 146 countries. WAGGGS works is to empower every girl to reach her fullest potential.
