How to Set Up Thunderbird Email Client

If you are looking for an email client with flexibility and customization options, Thunderbird could be the perfect choice for you.

Thunderbird is a free email program made by the Mozilla Foundation. It helps you manage many email accounts, news groups, and RSS feeds. It's safe and can work with email types like IMAP, POP3, and SMTP. You can change how it looks and add extra features, and it's good at keeping your information safe. Note: If you have previously configured Thunderbird with another account, or if this is not your first setup attempt, begin by accessing the main panel. Right-click on Local Folders, select Settings, then Account Actions, and finally, click Add Mail Account to proceed.

To set up Thunderbird, please follow the steps below:

  1. If this is your first time setting up Thunderbird, the panel will display options as outlined in this article. You can choose to allow Thunderbird to scan and import messages from other email programs already set up on your system. If you prefer not to integrate, simply select 'Skip Integration.

  2. An option to create a new email address will appear. Click Skip this and use my existing email to proceed with setup.

  3. Refer to the table below to enter your name, email address, and password, then click Continue.

    Your name Enter the name you wish to display in the From field when recipients receive your email.

    Note:We recommend selecting Remember Password unless multiple users have access to your computer profile.

  4. Choose IMAP or POP3, then click the Manual config button to access advanced configuration options.

  5. Refer to the table below to enter the required information. Click Done when you have completed the process.
    Note:Thunderbird will attempt to automatically locate server settings for you. While it often retrieves the correct server hostnames, please verify their accuracy using the form below. Make sure to check Port, SSL, and Authentication settings.

    If you require your email settings, you can find them by entering your domain name below and clicking the Sign In button.

      POP IMAP

    Below are generic settings that should work for any email client or mobile device.

    Incoming Port: 110 (or 995 with SSL enabled)
    IMAP Incoming Server: imap.dotster.com
    Incoming Port: 143 (or 993 with SSL enabled))
    SSL (Optional): Enabled or Disabled
    Outgoing Server Authentication: Enabled
    Outgoing Server: smtp.dotster.com
    Outgoing Port: 587 (or 465 with SSL enabled)
     

    Note: If 587 is not working for the Outgoing Port, try using port 25 instead.

    Below are generic settings that should work for any email client or mobile device.

  6. A warning message may appear regarding encryption. Despite SSL setup options, warnings about invalid SSLs may persist due to custom domain names.
  7. Select I understand the risks and click the Done button to finish setting up.

    Your email account setup is complete. You can now start using Thunderbird.

How Do I Change Outgoing Server Ports in Thunderbird?

Whether you're troubleshooting your email client or setting it up for the first time, these instructions will guide you through an essential step in ensuring successful email sending with Thunderbird.

  1. On the Tools menu, click the Account Settings option.
  2. Click the account you want to edit.
  3. Select the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option, then select the SMTP server you wish to edit.
  4. Click Edit. A new box appears with advanced settings.
Use port 587 for sending emails. You may need to try this port before successfully sending emails. Once updated, your outgoing server port will be configured for optimal performance.
