Setting Up and Installing Google Tag Manager

To ensure that we can track phone calls that resulted from your Google Ads campaign, we need you to install and set up Google Tag Manager (GTM) on your website. GTM is a free tool offered by Google that acts as a middle person between your website and the analytics or marketing tools you wish to use. It has the tools you need to fully understand how visitors interact with your site.

Why You Need to Create Your Own Google Tag Manager Account

Account privacy and security are paramount to Google. Google uses multi-factor authentication to ensure that it is really you logging into your account. This may involve sending a code to your phone or email to verify your identity and may also involve confirming your location and browser.

 

How to Create a Google Tag Manager Account

Creating a Google Tag Manager account opens up a world of possibilities for website owners like you looking to gain insights into your traffic and improve your marketing efforts. By creating a Google Tag Manager account, a unique container will be generated, which you will need to integrate Google Tag Manager into your website. Below are the steps to create a Google Tag Manager account.

  1. Go to https://tagmanager.google.com and log in to your Google account or create a new account.
  2. Once you are on the Tag Manager page, navigate to the upper right side of the page, then click Create Account
  3. Fill out the following:
    1. Account Name: Your business name
    2. Container Name: Add your website URL here, such as www.domainname.com
    3. Target Platform: Choose Web
    4. Click Create

  1. Agree to the Google Tag Manager Terms of Service Agreement by selecting the checkbox at the bottom of the page and clicking the Yes button at the upper right corner of the page.

How to Install and Set Up Google Tag Manager

While Google Tag Manager is an invaluable tool for managing your website's analytics and marketing efforts, the approach to integrating GTM can vary significantly between different platforms.

Installing and Setting Up GTM on Website Builder

After creating a Google Tag Manager account and agreeing to the Terms of Service Agreement, you are now ready to set up Google Tag Manager for your website builder. If you need additional guidance, call our Online Marketing Support team at 888-642-0197 and select the PPC menu option.

Are you using a different website builder? If yes, you have the following options:
  • Did we design your website? Let us know, and we’ll see how we can help.
  • If we didn’t design your website, you can call your website design company, check out their support documents, and/or log into your builder to see if there is an area to add the code. Most modern website builders have a field where you can add the code once, and the builder will deploy it across each page of your website.
  1. Now that you have agreed to the Terms of Service Agreement, you will need to install the Google Tag Manager script on key pages of your website, such as your Contact Us page, Homepage, and main Service/Product pages. The box below shows where you can find your unique Google Tag Manager ID.

  1. Log in to your Account Manager via https://www.web.com/my-account/login.
  2. On the left side of the page, click eCommerce, Hosting, or Website to access your website builder
  3. In the bottom left corner of your website builder, click SETTINGS.

  1. Select Google Services, then click Google Tag Manager.

  1. Click the CONNECT button.

  1. Enter your unique Google Tag Manager ID into the field and click the SAVE button.

  1. Once the Google Tag Manager ID is added to your website builder, publish your website to ensure the code is live.
  2. In the Install Google Tag Manager box, add your domain name into the Test your website field and click Test to ensure the code is placed correctly. Press OK once Google Tag Manager confirms the tag is detected on your website.

  1. In your Google Tag Manager dashboard, click Admin and select User Management.

  1. Click the blue plus sign, then select Add Users.

  1. Add [email protected] and select Administrator access. Click Read.

  1. Click Invite to send us the notification that you’ve connected Google Tag Manager with our account.

Installing and Setting Up GTM on WordPress

In this installation guide, we will focus on using the plugin for Google Tag Manager integration. If you need additional guidance, call our Online Marketing Support team at 888-642-0197 and select the PPC menu option.

Below are the steps to set up and install Google Tag Manager in WordPress.

  1. Log into your WordPress website.
  2. Click Plugins on the left navigation menu, then select Add New Plugin.

  1. Search for Site Kit by Google plugin and select Install Now.

  1. Once installed, click Activate.

  1. There should be a message from Google Site Kit at the top of the screen. Click the button to Start setup.

  1. Click the Sign in with Google button. There is no need to check any of the other boxes.
  2. Google will take you through the sign-in process to access your Google account. Follow the steps to sign in and select to have Site Kit access Search Console data and manage the list of sites and domains you control. Click Continue.

  1. Google will then verify that you own your WordPress site. Click Verify to allow Google to add a tag to your website. Click Allow to turn on metrics, then click Set Up to set up Search Console.
  2. Click Go to my Dashboard.

  1. This will take you back to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. In the left menu under Site Kit, click Settings.

  1. Click Connect More Services. Under Tag Manager, click Set up Tag Manager.

  1. Google will prompt you to log in to your account again. Follow the steps.
  2. You will then be redirected to your WordPress dashboard and the Site Kit plugin.
  3. In Account, select the website to which you are adding Google Tag Manager. The Container will automatically update with your Google Tag ID.
  4. Click Complete Setup.
